Mr Thierry PONCET has accepted to serve as Secretary
of IUE Commission for a period of four years. He has given his views
on the future role of IUE Commission and suggested to concentrate
on the World Environmental Update in Leather Sector”. The Chairman indicated the names of the members who have sent their apologies
The two days meeting was held on 23rd and 24th May 2006 at Istanbul, Turkey. During the first day, a field visit was organised by Turkish Leather Technologies and Chemists Society to the Tuzla Leather Zone. Dr Volkan CANDAR and Dr Murat TOZAN guided the visit of members. The IUE members have also visited the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Tuzla. The CETP is one of the biggest effluent treatment plants with 30 million-litre/day capacity. The IUE members interacted with the CETP management team. The members have also visited the unit for fat extraction from fleshing, established near the CETP. During the second day, the meeting was held at Hotel Hilton, Istanbul. All the 11 documents were updated during the 2nd day meeting. The Recent Developments on Environmental Aspects of Leather Sector was presented by the member Chairman. The World Environmental Update presented in the Euro II Congress on 24th May 2006 was well received by the participants. The Chairman explained that the draft IUE Document 10- for restricted products in leather need to be finalized and released in the IULTCS Website since European Union has introduced the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals) from 1.6.2007. Mr Thierry PONCET has agreed to go through the Document and provide his observations before release of IUE document 10. The participating members have offered their suggestions in updating the IUE Document starting from IUE-1 to IUE-11. The new Member, Dr Wolfram SCHOLZ from SLTC, UK has agreed to provide his inputs on the IUE document in a month’s period. He will also interact with Mr Thierry PONCET in updating the entire document. It was proposed to introduce a new document IUE-7 (a) “The Standards and Permissible Limits for Treated Effluent from Tannery Sector in various Countries”. Dr. S. Rajamani, Chairman has agreed to prepare the document IUE-7 (a) and distribute to the members. The present IUE document IUE-7 will become IUE-7 (b).
Dr Campbell PAGE has suggested to allocate more time for reviewing the new developments in each country. Mr Thierry PONCET has also viewed the same and he has agreed to provide the recent developments in France in updating the document. The Chairman requested the other members to provide the latest development in their countries to incorporate in the future updates. The 2008 IUE Commission meeting was proposed to be held on 8th October 2008 at Rio Othon Palace Hotel, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil along with the XVII FLAQTIC Latin American Leather Science and Technology Congress. Ms. Katia Fernanda STREIT and representatives of Brazalian Leather Industry association have agreed to make the required arrangements for the IUE Commission meeting at Rio de Janeiro. The IUE 2009 meeting is proposed to be held in China along with XXX IULTCS Congress. The date and venue will be fixed in consultation with China Leather Industry Association. The meeting concluded with Vote of Thanks.
