Prof Attenburrow welcomed members to the second meeting of the IUT Commission.

1. Membership

The chair noted that IUT wished to recruit membership from around the world and was pleased to report that Dr Sadulla from CLRI in India had recently agreed to be a member of IUT. He was also pleased to report that Katia Street was helping IUT in gaining information about training in South America

2. Minutes of the previous meeting

These were accepted as accurate

3. Matters arising from the minutes not covered elsewhere

There were no such matters

4. Utilisation of the Questionnaire

It was noted that IUT had developed a questionnaire seeking views on the priorities for training and education in leather technology and related areas. The Questionnaire in paper and electronic format is being distributed widely around the world and respondents are being encouraged to reply by 20 July 2007.

5. Information about Institutions and courses

It was reported that IUT was collecting information on Institutions who offered leather training and also about what type of courses they offered. Information for China, India, Pakistan, EU, Turkey and South America had already been collected. It had been found difficult to get information about countries in Eastern Europe.

6. Global collaboration/networking

After the first IUT meeting, the development of formal collaborations between institutions in Spain, UK and Germany has been discussed and taken forward and discussions between European institutions and institutions in China and India are ongoing. It was stated that in Asian countries there may be a requirement for a training program for trainers.

As far as Africa was concerned it was noted that it would be helpful to seek the involvement of UNIDO in relation to countries such as Ethiopia. It was pointed out that Indian technicians are working in many tanneries in African countries and this is an important consideration.

7. Forthcoming ILF Meeting

It was suggested that it would be useful to invite someone from UNIDO to the forthcoming ILF round table discussion. It was noted that IUT had agreed to prepare a list of training institutions from around the world for distribution at the ILF.

8. Any other business

Much of the work of the IUT had been so far concerned with the training of those who would be employed at a professional level in the leather and related industries. It was noted that the training of other types of staff (e.g. operatives) should also be considered.

9. Date of the next meeting

The next meeting of IUT was scheduled for August 21st 2007 at 14.00. The IULTCS president Mr Marc Folachier has confirmed the location of the meeting as follows: 7th floor Meeting room of the Conseil National du Cuir (National Leather Council), 105 Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, Paris 75008, Paris, France.
