GENERAL ACTIVITIES

IULTCS is the most important Technologists and Chemists Federation worldwide; therefore, one of main targets is to be present at different events, such as: Trade Fairs, Congresses, Symposiums, Meetings, etc. In addition, it is the policy of the IULTCS to hold meetings at high level with Executive Directors and Presidents of these Leather Events.

Nowadays, still there are some Leather Organisations that do not know of the existence of IULTCS. Why not contact us and arrange a meeting at a Leather event to suit your convenience and learn of the benefits that membership of the IULTCS can bring to your organisation.

I.U.L.T.C.S. MERIT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE LEATHER INDUSTRY

On Thursday 13 September 2007 at a ceremony at BLC Leather technology Centre Ltd, Dr Robert L Sykes was presented with the IULTCS Merit Award for Excellence in the Leather Industry.

The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies instituted the Merit Award two years ago and Dr Sykes was elected to be the first recipient. The Award was made originally during the IULTCS Congress in Washington in May of 2007. Unfortunately Dr Sykes was unable to travel to Washington so Prof Jaime Cot, immediate Past President of the IULTCS, accepted the award on his behalf.

It was decided to honour Dr Sykes in person, so the ceremony was arranged at BLC and Prof Cot travelled to UK to make the presentation. About 20 dignitaries from the UK Leather industry attended the ceremony including past colleagues, staff from University of Northampton and BLC Leather Technology Centre Ltd, members of the SLTC and the Secretary of the IULTCS.

Messages of congratulations form the President and Vice-President of the IULTCS and Mr Alfredo Mattirolo were read and then Prof Cot gave a summary of Dr Sykes' careers and achievements. Prof Cot then handed over the Merit Award which was a framed plaque, signed by the President of the IULTCS, Mr Marc Folachier, the Vice-President, Mr Elton Hurlow and the Secretary/Treasurer, Mr John M V Williams. A floral tribute was also presented to Mrs Sykes.

In accepting the Award Dr Sykes paid particular tribute to the support he had received from his wife over the years. He continued that it was a great honour to be the first recipient of this award and that he hoped there would be many more recipients in future years.

The ceremony closed with a buffet lunch.

20 th DECEMBER 2005, GENEVE (SWITZERLAND)
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING SIGNED BETWEEN IULTCS AND ISO.

ISO

On 20th December 2005, Prof Jaume Cot, Dr Amanda Long and Dr Campbell Page met with Mr Alan Bryden , Secretary General of ISO to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between IULTCS and ISO.

IULTCS has had a special relationship with ISO since December 1989 when it's Standards Comissions (IUC, IUP & IUF) were designated as having USB (Unique Standards Body) status. As a result the IULTCS Comissions are considered to be the ISO Technical Conmittees for leather and any IU methods can be submitted direct to ISO FDIS for vote as an ISO standard.

Over the past 18 months the IU commission chairmen have been negociating with ISO to update this agreement. The aim being to have a combined system of working between the two organisations which results in a single jointly numbered standard.

Now the MoU has been signed, the next step is to make arrangements for these joint standards to be available for sale through the IULTCS website. Also planned is an updated set of official methods available on CD-ROM containing all the IU methods along with the joint IU and ISO methods.

ASIAN ASSOCIATIONS MEETING

IULTCS President’s Report

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to all those who have given their time and enthusiasm to the Union since its inception in 1947.

Many years have passed since then, and today we live in a globalized world with a constantly changing market that affects many countries. The development of new technologies, such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, etc, alongside the daily necessity of connecting through the internet, has changed the plans and strategies that existed only a few years ago.

There are scientific principles that are eternal, such as, for example, the law of thermodynamics that states that “energy may be neither created nor destroyed, only transformed.” This could be considered a simile applicable to the leather industry worldwide. It is clear that the leather industry in the old Europe is disappearing, and it is possible that the only such businesses that will remain in the future are those that are able to produce very high quality leather with new characteristics. This includes rapid and highly versatile, small-scale production. But does this mean that the leather industry is going to disappear? Absolutely not. This industry behaves like energy: it is not destroyed, only transformed. In other words, it moves to other latitudes, as is currently occurring on the Asian continent, specifically in the Republic of China, driven by factors such as workforce costs, currently less stringent environmental restrictions, etc. Nevertheless, advances in research, development, and technological innovation must continue to progress in order to improve our industry, wherever it might be located.

The IULTCS, which brings together more than 25 countries worldwide, can be considered as the “technical arm” of the leather industry. There are still some associations that might think “what purpose does the IULTCS serve, and what can it really do?” A great deal. I would draw attention to two fundamental aspects:

a) Protection of the leather industry worldwide through the establishment of testing and analytical methods (IUP – physical tests; IUC – chemical analysis; IUF – strength tests) in ISO/IU format. It is now more than 10 years since the ISO (Geneva framework agreement) recognized the IULTCS as the only worldwide organization with the authority to draw up official methods on leather. This was a very important advance for all. Nowadays, it is still common for some clients to impose the use of testing methods that come from textiles,

plastics, etc, especially when the manufactured product is made up of various materials, including leather, such as in the case of shoes, car upholstery, etc. It is for this reason that the IU Commissions will study, whenever necessary, tests appropriate for leather that work in parallel to these.

b) The IUE Commission is doing excellent work in the environmental field, preparing 11 very important documents that can be downloaded from the IULTCS website www.iultcs.org

c) In addition, the IULTCS organizes a large biannual scientific-technological FORUM in the form of an international congress held in different countries.

It has been a real privilege for me to be the President of the IULTCS at this twenty-eighth Congress in Florence. I am deeply honoured to be a member of the Associazione Italiana dei Chimici del Cuoio –AICC-, and words fail me when it comes to describing the artistic beauty of this unique city; the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi, the Duomo, etc. are just a few of the many treasures to be found here in Florence. Indeed, I can think of no better place to hold this Congress.

Between the 9th and the 12th of March 2005, the XXVIII Congress of the IULTCS has taken place in Florence, Italy. I have no doubt that it has been a complete success, as had been previous congresses organized by the Italian Leather Chemists Association (AICC). In addition, however, this congress undoubtly has marked a reference point for the future of IULTCS Congresses, as a result of a number of coinciding factors:

Prof. J. Cot IULTCS President

Mr. Franco Donati AICC President

1. The election of Florence as the venue for this congress could not have been better. Florence represents a meeting point for the arts (painting, sculpture, architecture). It is an incomparable setting for an international congress.

2. The Heidemann Symposium has been omitted, and in its place during this and in future IULTCS congresses a new section known as "The Heidemann Lecture" will follow the opening ceremony. This takes place in memory of a personality well known throughout the world and will consist of a special communication of particular interest chosen by the organizing committee.Professor F. Ciardelli, world known scientist has given an magnificent lecture over “The molecular dynamics approach to the supermoleculars structure of collagen and related binding properties”.

2. The organizing committee has wanted to prepare a technical program that is more digestible; comfortable at the same time as interesting. How? There will be two types of contribution:oral communications and visual displays. The oral communications have been reduced considerably, with the aim of not overloading
the program excessively. The visual displays, taking the place of the old posters, represent an approach that endeavors to give these scientific contributions equal status to the oral presentations. There has been a room adjacent to the auditorium in which 20 stands has been installed with separations between each, wherein authors could “decorate” the interior in whatever way they wished; for example, by putting up “posters”, incorporating slide presentations, videos, etc (with the prior agreement of the organizing committee). Each day, different pieces of scientific work have been presented that could be visited throughout the course of the day. According to the technical program, there will also has set up an official time to visit the presentations that didn’t coincide with the oral presentations. In addition, at the end of each day, authors have had 5 minutes available in the auditorium to present a summary of their work, with an opportunity for discussion afterwards.
I think that this development will restore dignity to the older “posters” and equalize the standing of these presentations alongside the oral communications. Often, scientific or technological work is somewhat dry and tedious to present orally. However, synthesized in the form of schemes in the "visual displays" it may be more comprehensible.

4. Round Tables: one based on “Innovation and Automation : evolution pathway towards an industrialized tannery”, and another, based on :”Training : a fundamental element for competitiveness”, both has been very active and with a long debates. It has been an excellent idea form the Organizing Committee; however, it has been a pity that the invitation made by AICC to other international tanners were not attended. This Round Tables estructure provides an interesting debate amongst tanners, technicians, chemical supply specialist, researchers, etc, as long as can be found the right moderator, like has been Mr. Maurizio Maggioni.Well done Maurizio.

5. The welcome cocktail has been set up inside of the magnificent “Salone dei Cinqueccento” from the 15th century was used for the assemblies of the General Council of the People; the “frescoes” on the walls of this Hall , and the panelled ceiling, etc ,originally decorated by Michelangelo and Leonardo; offers a precise historical view of the glorious past of the Medici Family. It has been a fantastic framework to welcome this Congress and great conference given by Gustavo Defeo, over “The influence of Leaher in the Pianoforte Evolution in the XVIII and XIX Centuries”, followed by the Harpsichordist Virginia Rolfo, from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, who played a splendid piece of the composer Giustini.

6. This XXVIII IULTCS Congress in Florence has represented a reference point for the IULTCS itself. During this Congress the image of the IULTCS has been promoted in order to raise its dignity and personality, for example : giving different

items to the participants : umbrella, badge, CD-ROM of the IULTCS website and installing pannels all over places with the Mark of IULTCS.

Inuaguration of the IULTCS Flag

hand over the IULTCS Flag to Dr. Volkan Candar , President of DETEK (Turkey), Organizers of II IULTCS EUROCONGRESS in Istambul 2005, and Dr. Elton Hurlow , elected vicepresident of IULTCS and Chair of Organizing Commission for the XXIX IULTCS Congress in USA (2007)

7. For the first time in the IULTCS’s history it has been unveiling the IULTCS flag, showing the brand image in white against a blue background; this special contrast of colours is similar to that used in the United Nations flag and reflects the global nature of our organisation. There are has been set up two flags, one inside and another on the upper part of this Palace; while the flag was being unfurled and hung , simultaneously everybody could hear a piece of music chosen by our Secretary/Executive Treasurer, Mr. John Williams. And he was right when he said: Which chemical is most widely used in the leather industry? It must be WATER; therefore, why don’t we use Handel’s Water Music, and John suggested the “Air” from the Water Music Suite No. 1 in F Major. It has been splendid.

On the day of the closing ceremony the flag was taken down and folded in order to be passed on to Dr. Volkan Candar, President of DETEK, (Turkey), organizers of the II IULTCS EUROCONGRESS (2006) and to Dr. Elton Hurlow, Vicepresident of IULTCS and, Chair of the organising committee for the twenty-ninth IULTCS Congress to be held in the USA (2007), and so on for all future congresses.

The technical program has covered all areas of manufacture in the leather industry, and the problems associated with them: improvement of conventional processes and their substitution by others that minimize contamination, better known as “clean technologies”; research in the area of biotechnology that aims to optimize the use of new enzymes, mainly employed in the beamhouse process depilado, pelambre, rendido, etc ; optimization of Chrome (III) tanning and alternatives to this process; finishing without solvents; purification of effluents using biomembrane reactors; processing of residues, etc, etc.

I am very proud and honored that my presidency has coincided with the celebration of this congress in Florence. It is my conviction that the XXVIII Congress of the IULTCS will be remembered for many years in the history of the IULTCS.
I would like to congratulate the AICC in particular his President, Mr. Franco Donati, to the Organizing Commission and to the Scientific-Technical Committee for the great job done in organizing this XXVIII IULTCS Congress. Thank you for your straight collaboration with the IULTCS.
CONGRATULAZIONI AICC.

Prof. Jaume Cot
IULTCS President

IUE Meeting 9th March
Florence 2005

The day before the opening ceremony of the XXVIII IULTCS CONGRESS in Florence ( 9th of March at 9.30 ) was held the IUE Commission Meeting (environment) under the chairmanship of Dr.S. Rajamani

14th February 2005
Associazione Italiana dei Chimici del Cuoio (A.I.C.C.)
Santa Croce sull'Arno - Pisa
ITALY

Following through the schedule Meetings with the Organizing Commission for the XXVIII IULTCS Congress in Florence (Italy), due to take place, next 9th-12th March. On the 14th of February and at the AICC’s Headquaters in Santa Croce sull’Arno was held a joint Meeting AICC / IULTCS. Attenders were the following : for the AICC, all Memebers of its Eexecutive Committee, and representing the interest of IULTCS its President, Dr. J. Cot.

The main items of the Agenda were based on going through, in detail, over the different aspects of the XXVIII IULTCS Congress Program, such as : the personality that is giving the Heidemann’s Lecture, Prof. F.Ciardelli, very well known macromolecule scientist; the Oral Presentations, Visual Displays organization, IU Commissions Meetings, special mention to the Council of Delegates set in Program for Friday 11st at 16:30- 18:00; furthermore, a complete analysis of IULTCS Congress Guidelines Document.

The main problem up to now is the number of registered persons to attend the Congress; however, the specific characteristics of the Leather Sector, behaves in such a manner that delays this necessary stage untill the last week. Taking in account that the President of AICC, Mr. Franco Donati is an important tanner, he will manage to convince the rest of tanners and their technicians to fill in the correspondent registration forms.

On the afternoon and together with Mr. Ricardo Bambi, Customer Relations of E.N.I.C. ( International Convention Organization) have visited in detail, the Palace of Congress: Auditorium, meeting rooms,Visual Display places , etc.
Three weeks to go and everything seems is under control according to AICC. Good Luck to the AICC!.
