“I Seminar on Accelerated Aging, Colour and Appearance in the Leather Industry”. 8 April 2005

PROGRAMME:

The first part of the conference was a talk given by Catherine Gadomski, International Marketing Manager, of Q-Panel Lab Products USA, on the phenomenon of artificial methods of accelerated aging.
The second part was given by Licenciate R. Daniel Lozano, Technical Director of Tecnología del Color (Colour Technology), on the topic of color and appearance in the leather industry.
At the end of the conference, a demonstration was given of the BYK-Gardner instruments on exhibit and the questions of those attending were answered.
Given the great interest generated by the topic, approximately 70 people were present for the first part of the talk, which had simultaneous translation facilities from English to Spanish.
The President of Tecnología del color, Daniel Braguinsky, presented the Association with a gift copy of the book Colour and Its Measurement (El Color y su Medición), written by Licenciate Daniel Lozano, as well as the publications “Chosen Readings I and II” (“Lecturas escogidas I y II”), which will be indexed in the Library, where they will be available for consultations by members of the Association.

The seminar closed with this last-mentioned act.

Colour and Appearance in Leathers- Resumé of the talk by Licenciate Lozano

Leather is a natural product used in different *ways, varying from personal uses such as those ranging from footwear and luggage to furniture and ornamental articles. Leather is presented in different forms: dyed, painted, with natural or artificial texture (grained). The colour and appearance of the product depend on various factors. First, the observer can be the one responsible for some quality control regarding the person who manufactures the product or the client who wishes to purchase it. The evaluation criteria are different for these different people and the defects perceived by some may not be detected by others and, inversely, aspects that *are artificial are not considered by quality control *and may be determinants for the *artificial or not of the consumer.
Everything depends on what is seen, how it is seen, and its *artificial in the psyches of the individuals. This talk aims to show the complexity of how the human being perceives appearance and color in objects and the physical methods that are used to evaluate this perception, further showing the attainments and limitations and, along with sales, the instrumental methods.

“Artificial aging” – Summary of the talk by Catherine Gadomski:

We need to know the resistance to aging of the materials we handle.
Influences in this situation include the structure of the substrate, the type and concentration of colours, etc.
It is ideal to test deterioration in external environments; but to get rapid results, techniques are used that make it possible to accelerate the phenomenon.
The best results are obtained with equipment with xenon lamps, which can be complemented by filters to get different situations, and variation of environmental conditions.
The comparison element is the known series of blue fabrics, decreasing light fastness.
Tests can be carried out in laboratories the firm has in different locations: Arizona and Florida, in desertic and subtropical environments, respectively.

This topic is highly important in industries like textiles, leather, etc. But it takes on special relevance in regard to automobile interiors.
To get consistent results, it is necessary to standardise conditions, so that the mode of action of the light is repetitive.
In line with this, the different testing norms were analyzed (ISO, SAE, DIN, AATCC), and interesting considerations were made on the different testing equipment, conditions, etc.

Translator’s Note: The text was received with instructions to ignore the fragmentary nature of parts referring to “artificial” etc. This was done, adding words on occasion to make the omissions less apparent. The asterisk highlighted in red is to note that I haven’t been able to interpret the Spanish phrase at that point.

Round Table : Norm EN 13336 – 5 May 2005 –

Participating as panellists:

–Licentiate Patricia Polzinetti (Manager of Quality Assurance, Curtiembres [Tanneries] Fonseca S.A.); Licentiate Daniel Domínguez, (CITEC); Engineer Claudio Salvador (Curtiembre [Tanneries] Antonio Espósito S.A.) ; Mr Omar Peña (Quimia Color S.A ).; Mr Mirko Biscotto (Samia spa, Italy) y Mr Guillermo Canestrari (TFL Argentina S.A).-
Licentiate Jorge Vergara, president of the AAQTIC (Argentine Leather Industry Chemists and Technicians Association) presented the panellists and explained their guidelines. At the end of their talks, the panellists answered the questions of those attending.
By way of introduction, Licentiate Patricia Casey, of Polzinetti, made reference to the activity being developed by the Norms Commissions of the IULTCS (International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies), calling on those present to participate in the discussion forum this institution has on the Internet.
Engineer Claudio Salvador, established a series of interrogatives in regard to: “Who sets the requirements for testing?, Are these reasonable?, How long should a leather product last?, Are there norms that state what criteria a leather product should satisfy?.
Many of these questions are conditioned by the very widespread belief that leather for upholstery or for apparel should last a lifetime... or longer.
To date, the minimum requirements that upholstery leather must meet—as no norms exist in this regard or, in any case, those that exist are partial or out of date—have created a vacuum that was occupied with proposals of the tanneries, who base their understanding on what each type of leather can fulfil for their customers. In other cases, it has been these people precisely who have fixed minimum values for the tanneries.
In all events, the requirements usually strongly condition the formulae and the production processes.
In general, it is assumed that the different lines (aniline leather, pigmented, *Nobuk-style) have different values. At the same time, until now no norm had existed like the present one, which introduces specifications of a general character for Europe, which is a new instance that opens up other interrogatives such as: Are the parameters correct?, Are the values reasonable?
As a point of departure, we can recognise that some values are demanding, but they also include still other requirements: inflammability, scratch resistance, stain resistance, resistance to cold, and pH.
The act concluded with a cocktail reception.

Translator’s Note: The Argentinean term “nobucado” is sometimes translated as Nobuk on different websites on the Internet. I’ve used Nobuk-style as a kind of compromise, as I’ve been unable to find “nobucado” in any dictionary.

“I Seminario Sobre Envejecimiento Acelerado, Color y Apariencia en la Industria del Cuero”. 8 de Abril de 2005

PROGRAMA

ROUND TABLE : STANDARD EN 13336 – 5th MAY 2005 -

Participaron como panelistas

:–Lic Patricia Polzinetti ( Gerente de Aseguramiento de la Calidad de Curtiembres Fonseca S.A.); Lic Daniel Domínguez, ( CITEC);Ing Claudio Salvador( Curtiembre Antonio Espósito S.A.) ; Sr . Omar Peña ( Quimia Color S.A ).; Sr.Mirko Biscotto ( Samia spa ,Italia) ySr Guillermo Canestrari ( TFL Argentina S.A).-

SLTC ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND DINNER DANCE
Saturday 15th October 2005
Royal Kings Arms , Lancaster (United Kimgdom)

The venue for this year’s SLTC conference has been confirmed as Royal Kings Arms, Lancaster (Tel 01524 32451, Fax 01524 841 698). Date: Saturday 15th October.

Lancaster has excellent road and rail links with plenty to do in the vicinity for accompanying persons. The hotel is located in the centre of Lancaster, 10 minutes from the M6, J33 or 34. The railway station is 10 minutes walk as well. The cost of rooms at the hotel is £55 for a single or £70 for a double.

The committee has also decided to theme the Dinner/Dance under the title ‘L for Leather’. Please come ‘appropriately’ dressed as anything starting with the letter ‘L’, if desired, liming pit anyone?! There will be a Prize for the ‘best’ dressed entrant as voted for by the other diners on the night. What is that prize? You’ll have to come along and see. We will also have dance music for your entertainment and delectation!
The lecture programme this year includes:

- Roy Thomson, former SLTC President, who will provide a seasoned lecture on the conservation of leather in honour of Professor Henry Procter;
- Amanda Long, BLC and current chairman of the SLTC technical sub-committee, who will show us why DNA detection can sort the sheep from the goats;
- Satra’s Phil Shaw will follow up his lecture to the Northampton group with a discursive about Satra’s understanding of the leather supply chain;
- A lecture from ukfirst, established by the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) to achieve world class performance in quality, cost and delivery. Learn how ‘lean management’ can save you time, chemicals and, hence, money – surely worth the conference fee alone!
- A panel discussion, with industry experts discussing the merits (or otherwise!) of chrome, veg and wet-white tannages in the 21st century. They will discuss the current trends, the future of each tannage, and where tanning is going in this millennium. This will be followed by a question and answer session.
- Ever wondered about vellum and parchment production? Well Tova Irving, from Newport Pagnell-based William Cowley will be on hand to discuss how this niche market product is made, and how it has developed over the centuries
- The British School of Leather Technology has a thriving research programme and we will hear from a final year PhD student Mercedes Catalina, on how gelatin is being extracted and purified from what would be a waste product – chrome shavings

A number of bursaries will be available to encourage those members who are under 40 to attend the conference and dinner. Further details of how to apply can be sought from the SLTC general secretary. (Office@sltc.org)

What more do you need? It has to be “Conference ’05: Lancaster. Come-On!”

Annual Conference and Dinner Dance
University Arms Hotel. Cambridge

This year’s conference is set in the beautiful and historic city of Cambridge. The city offers a wealth of places to visit; too numerous to mention in fact! There are, of course, the 22 colleges, most of which have outstanding and historic architecture and beautiful grounds, no less than 26 museums and galleries covering a wide range of interests, a 40 acre botanical garden, shopping and why not hire a punt on the river Cam. A weekend is not long enough to appreciate all that this city has to offer. The major attractions are marked on the following map which can be found, together more information, on the Cambridge City web site www.visitcambridge.org. Cambridge is well served by road and rail and is less than 30 minutes from Stansted airport where, if booked early enough, Easyjet offer very reasonable flights.

For those arriving in Cambridge on Friday 10th September, our president, Dick Roy, would be pleased to organise a golf tournament on the Friday evening if there is sufficient interest - contact Dick by e-mail at richard@richardroy.fsnet.co.uk

The venue

The Conference and Dinner Dance is to be held at the four star University Arms, so called because the arms of all the Cambridge universities can be found in the ballroom of the hotel. This Victorian hotel is set right in the very heart of the city and could not be a closer base from which to visit the attractions that the city offers. The hotel overlooks the large area of parkland called Parker’s Piece where the basic rules of association football were formed in the 19th century.

The oak panelled conference room has a reception area where registration will take place and refreshments will be served in the morning and afternoon intervals. In this area there is space for publicity and information to be displayed for delegates to browse during breaks. If you have any display material and would like to take advantage of this, please let me know.

In the evening, after pre-dinner drinks kindly sponsored by Stahl International, the Dinner Dance will be held in the ornate Ballroom. If anyone has any special dietary requirements for the dinner, please let me know beforehand.

Parking

As with any central location in a major city, there are parking considerations. The hotel has its own 80 place car park, which is chargeable, and there is guaranteed parking space for residents. If the hotel is very busy, non-resident delegates may wish to park in the NCP car park at Lions Yard or Queen Ann car park just across Parker’s Piece (see map). The hotel is close to all public transport facilities and the city also operates an efficient park and ride system.

PRESS RELEASE

BLC postpones Keynote Seminar 2004 - 20 to 22 October

The BLC Keynote Seminar entitled "A cleaner, greener future for the leather industry" will be rescheduled for January 2005 at a date and venue to be advised.

To maximise the dissemination of the information and benefits of the European supported MOND gasification project, a partnership between AIICA, BLC, ELKEDE and Rovesta, BLC has negotiated an extension to the project.

Gasification, a means of generating energy from waste, offers an attractive proposition to address the growing problem of solid waste management. This is a vitally important issue for the leather and other industries, with serious cost and legislative implications.

It is anticipated that the event will now coincide with a pan-European RESTORM project meeting and the opportunity will also be taken to extend the scope of the event to include as wide a range of other industries and interested parties as possible.
