Dr. Volkan CandarIncoming President’s Message to Members

First of all, I would like to say that it is a great honor to undertake the Presidency of such an exceptional Union. I have been a member of the IULTCS Executive Committee since 2007, when nominated as IUR chair. This was one of the new working groups created by President Marc Folachier, who launched the "Istanbul Initiative" following a successful regional conference in 2006 in Turkey. I have come to realize that this Union’s significance far exceeds my initial impressions. It is in fact the most important international scientific and technical organization of the leather world. I have been aware of the IULTCS since the time of Presidents Prof. Heidemann and Dr. Wachsmann, and came to know it better during the time of Presidents Prof. Tony Covington, Juan Manuel Salazar, and Dr Jaume Cot. More recently I have been actively involved in the IULTCS during the time of Presidents Marc Folachier, Elton Hurlow and Prof. Bi Shi. Now, it is my turn to be the President. I will certainly try to raise the bar of the Union as I have learned from my precedents.

Now it is time to improve cooperation with “other actors of the leather world,” creating a politically neutral platform. Now it is time to concretize the “vision” of the leather world and focus on common purpose. Recently, as a first step our organization signed a Memorandum of Understanding together with ICT and ICHSLTA. This is a milestone for our leather industry. We should thank the Past President Prof. Bi Shi and our IUL Chairman Elton Hurlow for their outstanding efforts in bringing this Memorandum into effect. We can now conceptualize more extensive co-operation for raising the image of leather in 21st Century and better define the concept of an “international leather brand”.

In order to actualize these objectives we should never forget our primary responsibility to the leather industry. We represent leather technology and leather science. We represent those who innovate in the leather world and develop new technologies. I am looking forward to the Montevideo and Taipei regional conferences in 2012 and IULTCS International Congress in Istanbul in 2013. We will witness recent developments and innovations in the leather industry and the work presented will surely lead to further innovative research and findings at future meetings, such as the International Union Congress in 2015 in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil. All these studies offer the industry a unique weapon for defending against irrational and sensationalist attacks.

Dr. Volkan Candar
IULTCS President – Jan. 2012
